Come out and tour a replica of Althea Sherman''s 1915 chimney swifts'' tower at National, Iowa!
Althea Sherman (1853-1943) was a nationally known ornithologist who studied birds at her home in National, Iowa. Best known for her study of the chimney swift, she built a 28 foot tall building with an artificial chimney down the center to attract the elusive swift.
The Friends of the Sherman Swift Tower are sponsoring these tours at the National Cemetery in National, Iowa.
National is on Hwy 52, six miles north of Garnavillo, Iowa. Signage a the site and an audio recording tell more of the history. The National Cemetery contains the gravesites of the Sherman family. Visitors are always welcome.
Tours of the tower replica will be given in the spring and fall, when swifts are not nesting in the tower. Watch for Althea''s birthday celebration to be held in the month of October.

Effigy Mounds National Monument will continue its tradition of monthly summer bird walks on Saturday.
Birders of all abilities are welcome to join Park Ranger Dennis Kirschbaum at the visitor center at 8:00 a.m. for a bird walk along the Yellow River Bridge Trail.
The Yellow River Bridge Trail has proven to be great for birders with prothonotary warblers, scarlet tanagers, bluebirds, warbling vireos, red-eyed vireo, blue and green herons, and pileated woodpeckers welcoming visitors to the area. The trail winds through a woodland, crosses by a pond and winds along the wetlands of the Yellow River Bridge Trail. The varied habitats along this short trail give birders ample opportunity to observe a wide range of species.
Those visitors who would like to walk farther will have the option of going up the North Unit Trail toward the restored prairie on the top of the bluff. Indigo buntings, scarlet tanagers, woodpeckers and towhees are common in this area. Great-crested flycatchers and turkey vultures may be seen on the return trip from Fire Point.
Visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and bring binoculars, a pencil (checklists will be provided), and water for the hike. Guided bird walks will be offered once a month throughout the season - June 12, July 10, August 7, and September 18.
Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals.
The monument''''''''''''''''s main entrance is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa on HWY 76. The visitor center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Hiking trails are open dawn until dusk. For more information, call (563) 873-3491 or visit the park''''''''''''''''s website at www.nps.gov/efmo.
